What is a power of attorney?

A power of attorney allows a person, known as the “agent” or “attorney-in-fact,” to act on behalf of another individual, known as the “principal.” This power may take effect immediately or only when a specific event takes place, such as a loss of mental capacity. The agent’s legal authority can be broad or specific, depending on the power of attorney.
